Please read the details below for everything you need to know about your child's dance program. For your convenience, you can purchase your dance attire at the studio as it is highly recommended to give your child the full dance experience. Plan A - In-Person Classes with reduced spots and distancing – masking may be in effect Plan B - Hybrid rotation with alternating dancers in-studio and online Plan C - Fully Virtual - Government Mandate Closure with a full schedule of online classes We are committed to offering dance inside, outside, or online and will keep the connection alive. If you have not received one from registration, please update your contact information at the front desk. All receipts are emailed. We ask that you do not unsubscribe from any of our emails, as this is our way to keep you informed. Payments Dancers are set up on a monthly payment plan. Payments will be processed on the 1st of each month until May 2022. Additional Fees Recital tickets, dance attire, costumes, DVD's pictures, videos, dance attire, apparel, etc. Soul Snack Bar Place a credit on your child’s account and they can purchase healthy snacks at the studio. Soul Connexion's Dance Attire Policies Dance Attire Requirements Dance attire is important so that we can see proper body alignment and position for all dancers. Dance attire requirements are mandatory for all annual dancers and all students must have proper attire and shoes before the end of September, and everything can be purchased at the studio. Dancers must have their hair tied back in a bun for all ballet classes and a ponytail or bun for all other dance classes. We want to set your child up for success and ensure they have a proper mindset so they can look and feel their best. We make it easy and have a wide variety of attire, shoes, and tights available for sale. If you are unsure of the right fit or style needed, one of our soul sisters is happy to help you find your required attire. < Back Jedidiah Akinloye Dance Teacher Jedidah Akinloye Jedidiah is a dancer and choreographer based in Calgary. His journey in dance began at the age of 9 through musical theatre, and over the past 12 years, he's developed a deep passion for various dance styles, particularly Hip-Hop, R&B, and Afrobeats. For the past four years, he has been a dedicated member of the MASSES X S.O.D. crew, where he has had the opportunity to grow and evolve as a dancer under the guidance of talented choreographers like Sho Thyme. This experience has shaped his style and deepened his appreciation for the rich culture and history of Hip-Hop dance. Jedidah's dance journey has led him to numerous performances and teaching opportunities, which has landed him here at Soul Connexion. < Back Cara Poppitt Founder/Artistic Director Cara Poppitt Founder / B.Comm, B.A, Zumba, High Five, AFLCA Passion and energy led Miss Cara to her success as a dancer, fitness instructor and yoga teacher. She is a member of the Alberta Fitness Leadership Association and Dance Studio Owners Association. While Miss Cara is mostly known for her Hip Hop and Latin choreography, she has trained in Jazz, Hip Hop, Modern, Lyrical, Latin and Ballet. She trained in NYC and LA for several seasons and her passionate pursuit led her to many opportunities; from dancing professionally in Mexico and Dominican and performing overseas, to television roles, commercials, movies, modelling opportunities and concerts. She was the head choreographer and dancer for the Bulleros with the running of the bulls and choregraphed and danced for Swollen Members in concert. She has danced in commercials for Vibe 98.5 radio and choreographed and danced in a Disney Movie for Snow Two. She danced in two Country music videos that played on CMT. She loves to perform and has a background in acting, dancing and modeling. Miss Cara completed a combined degree from the University of Calgary in Business and Psychology, with a focus in health psychology. During her studies, she traveled with the U of C Dance department to Africa learning African Styles of dance. Miss Cara served as a master trainer to World Health clubs for several years – designing and teaching a signature series called Cardio Jam – and served as an ambassador for Lululemon. She also enjoys speaking at conferences and workshops with her Invest In Yourself series. Recently in 2020 she received International recognition and was the recipient of the Innovator Award from the Dance Studio Owners Association, recognized for her creativity and talent. In 2009, soon after she opened Soul Connexion, Miss Cara received the Global Television’s Woman of Vision for Arts and Culture. Her entrepreneurial energy was recognized early on as she was titled CIBC western Canada’s Student Entrepreneur for 2005. She has been featured in U Campus, Calgary Inc., Calgary Sun, Global Television, Shaw Television and the Calgary Herald for her unique approach to fitness and dance. She expands beyond the studio walls to offer dance, yoga and fitness programs to the public and catholic schools. She has been offering an onsite program for over 15 years and believes in giving back. She started Chance to Dance Scholarship program which sponsors deserving children each year with tuition. She was previously involved with the Student Entrepreneurship programs at the University of Calgary through SIFE for many years. She served on the business advisory board at the University of Calgary, has conducted workshops at the University of Calgary and various women’s retreats and she has spoken at several conferences with a message to inspire growth. Cara was previously a member of the Accelerator Business program through Entrepreneurs Organization as she believes in the importance of continual learning. Aside from the studio, she has three amazing children and a wonderful husband, that teach her new things every day. We believe in having fun and inspiring growth in our students while communicating the values of kindness, community, passion, positivity, authenticity and creativity. We believe in giving dancers opportunity to shine and also make an impact in the community through performance opportunities and healthy competitions. Requirem e nts To be accepted into our Competitive dance programs, you need to be recommended by a dance teacher for an annual competitive dance class or audition for placement. Dancers must be in: Pre Primary COMP - Minimum 3 classes (Ballet C, Jazz C, and Tap C) as the minimum requirement and can register for additional classes. Primary COMP - Minimum 4 classes (Ballet C, Jazz C, Ballet Tech, Jazz/Acro Tech) as the minimum requirement and can register for additional classes. Jr + Levels - 5 classes (Ballet C, Ballet Tech, Jazz C, Jazz Tech and Acro Tech) as the minimum requirements and can register for additional classes. Hip Hop COMP Only - Minimum 3 classes (Hip Hop C, Hip Hop Recreational, Jazz Recreational) as the minimum requirement and can register for additional classes. Our goal is to ensure every dancer is place in their most appropriate levels based on skill, age, and goals. Performance and Extra Rehearsals Competitive dancers aged 6+ will have opportunities to perform in a Competitive Gala and Year End Showcase and compete in 3-4 competitions (travel may be required for competitions). Expectations A dditional rehearsals outside of class time are required on the weekends starting in the Fall . Attendance and team commitme nt are mandatory to join the team. Additional privates at an extra cost will be required due to missed rehearsals or if you are new to a Competitive Team or style. To keep a strong mindset, dancers are required to come to class in proper dance attire & hair each week. Pre Competitive Dance Team Our Our Pre Competitive programs are built on the foundation of teaching our students good sportsmanship, commitment, work ethic, and dedication. It's time to let your child develop their confidence. We believe in giving dancers the opportunity to shine and also make an impact in the community through performance opportunities and healthy competitions. Soul Connexion is dedicated to providing a positive outlet for dancers to develop confidence, set goals and belong to a team that works together. These valuable skills will help them in all aspects of life Requirem ents To be accepted into our Pre Competitive dance programs, you need to be recommended by a dance teacher for an annual Pre-Competitive dance class or audition for placement. Dancers must be in 2+ classes (Ballet and Jazz,) as the minimum requirements and can register for additional recreational classes. NEW Pre Competitive Pre-Prim/Prim & Jr/Pre-Inter Hip Hop options. Dancers enrolled in the full Pre Competitive have the option to add this class. Hip Hop-only dancers must also take a rec jazz or hip hop class. < Back Taylor McNeill Operations Manager Taylor McNeill B.A. in Geography Taylor is a born and raised Calgarian, growing up on a farm just west of the city. Taylor’s dream of attending the University of British Columbia became a reality when she was accepted after completing high school, and she graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography for Environment and Sustainability. Taylor’s enjoyment of dance began at the age of six with her first Jazz class and continued throughout the next twelve years as she was additionally trained in Tap, Ballet and Pointe. Taylor spent many years in the dance competition circuit and even performed internationally with her dance troupe in Mexico as the nightly resort entertainment as well as on a cruise ship travelling through the Caribbean. Taylor is excited to be part of the Soul Connexion team and looks forward to building positive relationships with co-workers, clients, students and parents. Q & A with Taylor What inspires you? Also coming from a dance background, I love being able to relive my dance days by enjoying watching Competitive choreography, learning combos with my teammates and watching students grow into mature and caring people and dancers. Soul Connexion's Covid 19 Protocols COVID-19 Preventative Measures We are dedicated to providing a safe and comfortable dance experience for our dancers and families and will follow all COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Our annual dance classes will be available in person and online. If you are wondering how our studio is set up for in-studio classes you can watch our video outlining the changes we have made to keep our dancers safe and feeling good. We will continue to adapt as needed, bringing our students the best dance experience and peace of mind. *Please note that this video was last updated in October 2020 and our protocols have adjusted since then. New Dancer Protocols We will be guided by current regulations to ensure a safe environment for all students. We have implemented the following measures: Our lobby is closed for visitors Dancers must be dropped off and picked up at the front door Dancers aged 6 and younger can be accompanied into the lobby by one adult wearing a mask Your child will use hand sanitizer when they arrive and necessary health checks will be taken based on the health guidelines, which may include a temperature check If your child is sick they must stay home. Dancers will proceed to their studio room and find their special space with foot placement and markings to help ensure social distancing is in place at all times. To ensure the safety of our students, teachers, and staff, dancers are kindly asked to wear masks while in the studio and during their class. Our studio will be cleaned frequently and we have staggered our class times start and end times. We ask dancers to use the washroom before arriving and bring their own water bottles to class Our water fountain is closed at this time Bare feet will not be permitted. We ask that Lyrical and Contemporary dancers wear Jazz shoes, and Dancenastics and Acro students wear Acro Shoes. These will be available at the studio for purchase. If you wish to register in person or purchase dance attire, we kindly ask that you call us beforehand to book an appointment.
