< Back Lavender Wong Dance Teacher Lavender Wong Lavender Wong began her dance journey with 11 years of training in Chinese Cultural Dance before expanding her practice into contemporary dance. She holds a combined degree from the University of Calgary: a B.A. in Dance (with a concentration in Dance Production) and a B.A. in East Asian Language Studies (with a concentration in Japanese). Lavender has performed in choreographic works by various professional choreographers both within the university and in the wider community. Her performance credits include appearances at Ballet Bodies YYC and Fluid Festival, and she has contributed to Dance YYC Showcase as both a choreographer and dancer. Lavender is excited to be part of the team and bring a new lens of dance at Soul Connexion! Q & A with Lavender What inspires you? People! Whether that means the relationship with others or humans in general, I think "people" is something that sparks me from many aspects. What song moves you? I often like to dance to soundscapes/soundtracks, but Canto-Pop and J-Pop get me moving when I drive. What do you love about your job? < Back Alissa Lee Dance Teacher Alissa Lee Completion of grade 6 in the ISTD ballet syllabus, 11 years of technical dance training + 2 years in a competitive hip hop crew Originally from Winnipeg MB, Miss Alissa moved to Calgary for her combined degree in Dance + Kinesiology. She has trained in various styles of dance including Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Musical Theater, Contemporary, Modern, Funk and Hip Hop. She has also had the pleasure of working with artists such as Esie Mensah, Genie Baffoe, Katelyn Pemoller, Edgar Gilbert-Reyes, and many more. Although she has trained in all styles, Miss Alissa took a special interest in Hip Hop and successfully auditioned for BOSS dance team and IllFX Education, which are both competitive Hip Hop crews. Miss Alissa has training in old school hip hop, animation, vogue, tutting, locking, breaking, and house. Miss Alissa started her dance career early, with many opportunities stemming from her arts-based high school. At age 16, she choreographed at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for Manitoba Dance Day alongside Genie Baffoe and Romeo Suban. When she was 17, Miss Alissa co-produced a city-wide charity dance show for environmental awareness. With an audience of over 300, the show raised almost $5,000 and included unique styles like aerial acrobatics and urban contemporary. Teaching and choreographing is something Miss Alissa has loved to do since she started dancing. She believes that dance can provide so many wonderful opportunities to those who are passionate and willing to work hard. It is a perfect balance between artistry, athleticism, and performance skills. Miss Alissa is very excited to be sharing her passion and art with the community at Soul Connexion. Q & A with Alissa What inspires you? Music! I feel as though dance can be viewed as a visual interpretation of the song What song moves you? Any song with a 6/8 time signature, but Dive by Ed Sheeran has to be my favourite! What do you love about your job? I love being able to share my knowledge of technical and stylistic principles and watching them take that information, apply it, and then shape it into their own interpretation and style. < Back Meagan Swindlehurst Dance Teacher Meagan Swindlehurst Miss Meagan began her dancing journey at the age of 4 and has trained in Tap, Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, African, Hip-Hop, Acrobatics and Celtic. Throughout her dancing career, she has danced, trained, and competed across Canada and the United States. Her passion for dance shone through in productions including "Cinderella", "The Little Mermaid”, and "The Nutcracker”, as well as in her choreography within “The Beauty and the Beast”. Meagan has also trained with Storybook Theatre, acting as a main character in the comic opera, ”The Pirates of Penzance”, as well as with the Calaway Park Performers, where she danced, performed, and sang each day. She can also be seen in Gord Bamford’s music video, “Dive Bar”. Meagan’s upbeat personality and young, innovative choreography has won her awards and praise from many choreographers and teachers around the country. She aims to build strong connections with her students where they can work together to move dance training into lifelong skills and knowledge. Meagan holds her Bachelors degree in Kinesiology, her first year of ADAPT teacher training, and is excited to add Acrobatic Arts to her tool belt this summer! Currently Miss Meagan not only teaches dance, but also works at a preschool for kids with disabilities as a teaching and therapy assistant, and is enthusiastic about the excitements Soul Connexion will bring! Q & A with Meagan What inspires you? Helping as many people grow as I can, in as many ways as I can. It helps me grow and evolve! What song moves you? Book a Trial Class Recreational Dance Our recreational classes are designed to inspire and keep students active in a fun and engaging environment. Our programs run from September to June, and our dancers have the opportunity to showcase their skills at a year-end showcase. Additionally, we host two viewing days throughout the year for families to observe the class setting and see the growth of their child. Pre-Competitive Dance Our pre-competitive dance program offers a great way for dancers to explore a competitive experience without a significant commitment. Students in our pre-competitive program have performance opportunities throughout the year, including a Gala performance, one competition and a year-end showcase. To excel in their routines, students are required to take a minimum of two classes, focusing on skill development. Competitive Dance Our competitive dance team is designed for those looking to take their training to the next level. To excel, competitive dancers commit to a minimum of four hours per week of training, enabling them to reach new levels of growth. Many competitive dancers dedicate six to eight hours per week to achieve excellence. Our competitive dancers participate in four competitions, a Gala performance and a year-end showcase. < Back Emma Rees Dance Teacher Emma Rees Hello Soul Connexion friends and families! My name is Emma Rees and I love sharing my passion for dance. I am a recent high-school graduate and am taking open studies at Mount Royal University this upcoming fall. I have completed all three years of the Soul Connexion Apprentice program and I am very passionate about teaching and growing connections with my students. Dance has been a huge part of my life since I was three years old. It is so meaningful to me that I can continue to be in the dance environment and teach what I have learned from all of my years being involved at Soul Connexion. Q & A with Emma What inspires you? Something that inspires me is the beauty and kindness in people. When people are kind just purely because that's the person they are, it makes me feel motivated to be the very best version of myself forever and always What song moves you? A song that moves me is “Brightside” by the Lumineers. The song is essentially about being the best side or the brightest side of any day no matter how bad things may get What do you love about your job? Something I love about my job is connecting with my students. It brings me so much happiness when I can be someone people look forward to seeing at dance, and it makes me feel good to know that I can bring joy to so many people Describe Soul Connexion in one word If I had to describe Soul Connexion in one word I would choose “authentic”.
