    < Back Santhiago Avila Dance Teacher Santhiago Avila Originally from Colombia, Mr. Santhiago moved to Calgary in 2014. He right away joined Soul Connexion in the hip-hop program for the following 3 years. He is equipped with great teaching skills from being an instructor in Air Cadets as well as a Math Camp Leader at Classical Conversations International in June 2019. Since a young age he has been very passionate about health and fitness which lead him to enroll in multiple sports such as cheerleading, gymnastics, soccer, taekwondo, badminton, dance, weight lifting, track and field and many more. Mr. Santhiago is very excited to be part of the team and be able to create a safe environment for the kids to be free to express themselves through dance/music and improve their confidence as well as dancing skills.     < Back Taylor McNeill Program Manager Taylor McNeill B.A. in Geography Taylor is a born and raised Calgarian, growing up on a farm just west of the city. Taylor’s dream of attending the University of British Columbia became a reality when she was accepted after completing high school, and she graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography for Environment and Sustainability. Taylor’s enjoyment of dance began at the age of six with her first Jazz class and continued throughout the next twelve years as she was additionally trained in Tap, Ballet and Pointe. Taylor spent many years in the dance competition circuit and even performed internationally with her dance troupe in Mexico as the nightly resort entertainment as well as on a cruise ship travelling through the Caribbean. Taylor is excited to be part of the Soul Connexion team and looks forward to building positive relationships with co-workers, clients, students and parents. Q & A with Taylor What inspires you?     < Back Gina Aschenbrener Soul Sister Gina Aschenbrener Gina grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan where she pursued her love of dance. She started dance at the age of 3 and began teaching in her early teens. Her passion became a career as she owned her own dance studio for 5 years. She continued in the field of dance by teaching and progressed to adjudicating throughout Saskatchewan. Gina had also owned and directed her own dance competition in Regina for 15 years. Throughout her dancing career she also attended SIAST receiving her Administrative Diploma and worked in various administrative roles. After moving to Calgary in 2013 with her husband David, she focused on raising her two young children and was privileged to work from home as a virtual administrative assistant. Her 30-year career in administrative positions has made Gina very versatile, organized, detail-oriented and compassionate about her work. Now that Gina’s children have grown up, she wanted to explore the dancing industry again, and what better way than at Soul Connexion! She is excited to be a Soul Sister and work with the amazing staff, dance students and parents. When Gina is not working, she enjoys baking, working out and spending time with her family. Q & A with Gina What inspires you? Music inspires me as it is a way to express my emotions.   • Christine Mooney | Soul Connexion

    < Back Christine Mooney Dance Teacher Christine Mooney Miss Christine has had a love of performing for as long as she can remember. She has been dancing since the age of 3 and has received extensive training in many styles of dance. From an early age she participated in acting, voice, and dance classes and has completed exams in RCM Voice and CDTA Jazz and Tap. She then went on to further her education at The Canadian College of Performing Arts where she earned her Diploma in Performing Arts. After graduation, she spent some time competing professionally in Latin and been teaching dance and music since 2010. It was during this time that she developed a passion for watching her students learn and grow through artistic expression. She has over 25 years of experience in dance and musical theatre and has found her calling through the means of sharing what she has learned with others. Miss Christine has performed in over 25 full length musicals and has choreographed others, including Front Row Centre’s “Catch Me If You Can”and “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” where she won the Calgary Acts 2016 and 2018 CAT Award for Outstanding Choreography.     < Back Paige Jonason Dance Teacher / Fine Arts Club Lead / Pre Competitive Team Lead Paige Jonason B.A. Dance, A.D.A.P.T., R.A.D Miss Paige has been dancing since the young age of 3, completing many A.D.A.P.T. jazz exams and R.A.D ballet exams along the way. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Calgary, with a major in dance, and her involvement in courses like Dance Education led her to secure her career choice in teaching. She began her teaching career in 2011, educating students in the styles of Contemporary, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop and Tap. It was during this time that her passion for teaching blossomed in the education of younger children. She was involved in running a program for preschool aged children from 2013-2018; teaching rhythm and dance through the use of imagination and theme. She has also been involved in the Fine Arts Club program at Soul Connexion for 4 years now and holds her Child Development Assistant certificate. She loves sharing her passion for dance and teaching with Soul Connexion students. Q & A with Paige What inspires you? Music is my main inspiration. I love being able to hear a song and relate to the story it’s telling. It fuels my creativity and allows me to create choreography that matches either the story, or my emotions What song moves you?   • Mikaela Widdup | Soul Connexion

    < Back Mikaela Widdup Dance Teacher Mikaela Widdup Miss Mikaela’s love for dance came at a young age as she began to dance and never stopped. She has explored various styles including ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hiphop, tap, acrobatics, aerial arts, and musical theatre. She has always loved taking the opportunity to perform and share her love of art with others. Miss Mikaela has completed RAD ballet exams as well as acrobatic arts exams. She has studied under both the York University and University of Calgary Dance faculties and has been very lucky to train in various locations such as New York, Vancouver, and Toronto. Miss Mikaela is currently expanding her dance knowledge as she trains under the Decidedly Jazz Dance works in their professional training program. Miss Mikaela is Acrobatic Arts and Aerial Arts Certified. She is a current student of the University of Calgary working towards her Bachelor of Social Work with a minor in Dance. Miss Mikaela is passionate working with children and youth in building confidence, community, and a space to find ones individual artistry free of fear or judgement. Miss Mikaela is so very excited to join the Soul Connexion team this year and work with the wonderful dancers it facilitates! Q & A with Mikaela What inspires you? I am inspired by the individuals and environment around me. When we choose to see the good around us, our perspective is enlightened and we can accomplish so much. What song moves you?   • Alissa Lee | Soul Connexion

    < Back Alissa Lee Dance Teacher Alissa Lee Completion of grade 6 in the ISTD ballet syllabus, 11 years of technical dance training + 2 years in a competitive hip hop crew Originally from Winnipeg MB, Miss Alissa moved to Calgary for her combined degree in Dance + Kinesiology. She has trained in various styles of dance including Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Musical Theater, Contemporary, Modern, Funk and Hip Hop. She has also had the pleasure of working with artists such as Esie Mensah, Genie Baffoe, Katelyn Pemoller, Edgar Gilbert-Reyes, and many more. Although she has trained in all styles, Miss Alissa took a special interest in Hip Hop and successfully auditioned for BOSS dance team and IllFX Education, which are both competitive Hip Hop crews. Miss Alissa has training in old school hip hop, animation, vogue, tutting, locking, breaking, and house. Miss Alissa started her dance career early, with many opportunities stemming from her arts-based high school. At age 16, she choreographed at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for Manitoba Dance Day alongside Genie Baffoe and Romeo Suban. When she was 17, Miss Alissa co-produced a city-wide charity dance show for environmental awareness. With an audience of over 300, the show raised almost $5,000 and included unique styles like aerial acrobatics and urban contemporary. Teaching and choreographing is something Miss Alissa has loved to do since she started dancing. She believes that dance can provide so many wonderful opportunities to those who are passionate and willing to work hard. It is a perfect balance between artistry, athleticism, and performance skills. Miss Alissa is very excited to be sharing her passion and art with the community at Soul Connexion. Q & A with Alissa What inspires you? Music! I feel as though dance can be viewed as a visual interpretation of the song What song moves you? Any song with a 6/8 time signature, but Dive by Ed Sheeran has to be my favourite! What do you love about your job? I love being able to share my knowledge of technical and stylistic principles and watching them take that information, apply it, and then shape it into their own interpretation and style.     < Back How to Measure Students Properly ​ How to Properly Measure Each Dancer Chest/Bust Wrap the measuring tape on the widest part of the chest and go under the armpits all the way around. Waist Find the bottom of the ribs and top of the hips (roughly belly button height/smallest area on the torso) and measure all the way around. Hips Have them put their feel together and wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of the hip area. Girth Have the dancer stand with their feet spread apart and wrap the measuring tape under their crotch area and up around the opposite shoulder. Measure all the way around. Inseam Only measure for costumes that need specific pants. Have the dancer ​ ​
